Tips for Finding the Best Hotel Deals

Most of the hotel booking websites out there don’t just have a list of cheap hotels, and you’re
good to go. Most of them have search and filter options that will help you find what you need.
When you’re booking you’re trip, you likely will need to use a combination of strategies in
addition to a hotel booking website to get the best deal.
Identify Price Trends
The further ahead you can plan, the better off you’re going to be. Start by comparing your hotel
rates through different searches well before your booking deadline. This will help you identify
when prices tend to go up and down for various rooms.
Compare Prices Across Multiple Websites
Don’t just look at one website and be done, you need to check multiple. One hotel booking
website won’t have the cheapest hotel room all the time. It is up to you to not only look for price
trends but also across all the hotel websites.
Read the Fine Print
There can be a lot of fine print, but sometimes hotels won’t let you cancel if you book through a
third party. Resort fees and price hikes can be hidden in the fine print, so be sure to read before
you book.
Check Directly With the Hotel
Sometimes the lowest price is with the hotel. Call the hotel directly and see if you can get the
discounted price. This won’t always be the case, but hotels want to work directly with you and
may be able to work with you.
Book with Credit Card Points
Don’t sleep on travel credit cards! You can earn great bonuses by using travel credit cards when making big purchases. You can use credit cards that are directly affiliated with where you want to stay, or you can use cards that have travel portals and transfer opportunities. Some of my favorite cards include the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless®, Southwest Rapid Rewards, Sapphire Preferred and Chase Business Ink.
The Best Hotel Booking Websites

Hotels.com
While this website also gives you different property types, I’ve even found castles on this site. The search result capabilities aren’t why this website makes the top list. My favorite feature of this website is that the less expensive and discounted rooms get flagged in your search results, making it easy to find the best deals without too much effort. Their search tool even lets you look at ones that offer free cancelation!
Booking.com
Perhaps the most appealing part about Booking.com is that you don’t have to just look for hotel stays. This site also gives you access to hostels, bed and breakfasts, vacation homes, or other types of lodging too. You can sort by filters such as cleanliness, reviews, and budget making it easy to find the right booking. Being able to use so many features in their vast filter tool makes it easy to find whatever you want at a great price with this website.
Expedia.com
In this category, I’m going to cover Expedia, Orbitz, and Travelocity because they are all owned by the same company: Expedia, Inc. Because of this, if you use one, you’re going to get virtually the same experience no matter which one you pick. The design, pricing, and experience you get are nearly identical. However, some pros to using this one over other booking sites are how easy it is to use. The family-friendly search features make this a great option for planning family vacations.
Tripadvisor.com
If you are looking for hotel booking options that give you real reviews and help you pick the best choice, Tripadvisor is a great option. You can see photos from real people as well as unbiased reviews of what it’s really like to stay there.
Kayak
The sleek design of this booking site and filters that can help you see the total price make this a top pick when looking for the best hotels. You can compare prices across a bunch of different listings and easily see where the lowest price is. The best part of this booking tool is that you can see nightly rates across all the booking websites, which can help you save time and narrow down your search.
Priceline
If you are looking for steep discounts on hotel rooms, then this is the website you want to be using! This website has a mix of hotels and other types of accommodations that make searching for what you need easy. They even have a flag that you can use to see a lodging that is lower than the average price! The filters are not as extensive, but they have a bunch of unique search features that can help you find steep-discount deals.
How do I get the best hotel rates online?
It pays to shop around. You have to be sure that you’re doing your research and checking out all the available options.
Do hotel prices go down last-minute?
They can, yes. Last-minute hotel deals are a great way to snag a HUGE discount because the hotels want heads in bed at any price.
What is the cheapest day to check into a hotel?
The best day to check into a hotel to save the most money would be on a Tuesday. It always pays to double-check with the best cheap hotel booking sites to make sure you can easily compare.
As you start searching for deals, you’ll find that one hotel booking site won’t always have the best price all the time. When comparing rates for hotels, you sometimes are going to have to check them all to find the best one. However, comparing prices and starting your search early can help you find cheap hotels that just can’t be beaten. Look at all the best hotel discount sites to find the best possible deal!
